Reinvent yourself as a tenor!

The deep voiced Grizzly(tm) octave
violin fills the room with a lush, cello-
like warmth, but looks and plays like
a typical violin. Unlike a typical violin
simply fitted with octave violin strings,
this handmade instrument provides
much of the rich depth and power of
a cello or a tenor saxophone in a
small package. A fiddler or violinist
gets a fresh, incredibly live and rich
instrumental voice with the same
scale and intonation as a regular
violin.
Carleen Hutchins’ Violin Octet
includes a tenor violin (GDAE) and a
baritone violin (CDGA). We follow
this nomenclature for octave and
baritone. The tenor or baritone role
was filled by shoulder mounted
instruments in the past. Darryl
Anger, among others, revived the low
pitched, shoulder held strings a few

Unlike many octave violins, ours is a
fully capable acoustic instrument
rather than an electric. It fits in most
violin cases. The Grizzly(tm) Octave
prefers a viola bow over a violin.
