Husky Acoustics fossil ivory is “beach ivory” rather than “dug ivory.”
Dug ivory becomes stained and embrittled buried in soil on land,
usually in Eskimo village sites.  Dug ivory probably comes from animals
brought back after hunting.   It tends to be brittle and fractured.  In
contrast, beach ivory likely results from walrus carcasses left in the
ocean after isolated deaths or mass stampedes that kill many animals.

Beach ivory may be quite recent or extremely old.  Minerals in ocean
water permeate the material.  It often appears beautifully crystalized.
The color ranges from nearly white to quite dark bluish black.  The
Husky ivory is all white or off white.

Walrus tusk has a hard, uniform outer enamel and an inner, somewhat
less resistant dentine core.  The core has the most crystalline
appearance.  The outer enamel ranges from 3/8" to ½" thick.  The core
is small in females and thicker in males.

A piece of tusk on your mandolin has probably been used to dig for
clams on the ocean floor, been pushed into ice for aid in getting out of
the water, and crashed into other animal’s tusks in battle.  It is a
treasure.

Solid, uncracked ivory provides a stunningly effective medium for slick
string movement, for transmitting sound, and for beauty.  Walrus ivory
nuts and saddles give a warm, smooth, very open tone.  I think they
improve response.  They certainly ease tuning by allowing the string to
slide easily, while still being just soft enough to ensure excellent
contact.  The effect can be almost magical on some mandolins,
revealing the subtle beauty of tone, while highlighting the instrument’s
classic shape.

Walrus bridge upgrades are $155.  The bridges use Cumberland
Acoustics bases with saddles cut by Kurt at Husky Acoustics from
walrus he collects himself on long, lonely walks in the cold.

Walrus nut upgrade is $55.

Get both for $200.
