The German Guild Tradition
We’re proud to bring you affordable classic German bows, built in the traditional manner by professional bowmakers. We select these bows from the many presented to us.
German violinmaking began in the small town of Füssen during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, with luthiers making any wooden stringed instrument and bow required. Füssen was the center of luthiery at that time. From 1618, the Thirty Year’s War bloodied Europe. The luthiers of Füssen became refugees, carrying their knowledge throughout Europe.
German violin and bow making carries on the guild system. It remains illegal to claim to be a violin or bowmaker in Germany if one is not a member of the guild. To join the guild, a young man or woman first becomes an apprentice by either entering the workshop of a master or by attending a violin making school in Mittenwald, Klingenthal, or elsewhere. Once basic skill are obtained, the student becomes “journeyman,” named for the traditional approach of travel to work with a wide range of makers. After a minimum of two years, a journeyman may, with permission of his master, apply for a master’s examination. The testing process touches all aspects of the trade, finishing with the presentation of a completed violin or bow. If the journeyman’s “masterpiece” passes muster, he becomes a master.
In spite of numerous trials and stresses, the German guild tradition continues, with masters running relatively small shops of regular workers and apprentices. Our German bows come from such shops and are the product of unbroken tradition stretching back to the Middle Ages. Their quality reflects this tradition and the makers’ price in it.
