Bow Observations
The bow makes an incredible difference in ease of play and tone produced. Bows are difficult to describe and talk about. The best are made of a rare Brazilian wood, pernambuco. With growing scarcity of this wood, other materials are coming to the attention of players including other woods, carbon fiber, and various composites.
This short (and currently incomplete) discussion covers the parts of the bow, performance considerations, physical aspects, and the materials used in bows. Eventually I'll discuss the remaining subjects listed to the left.
One of the things we do that isn't common is to measure the stiffness of bows we stock. This measurement is deflection with a standard weight. The problem of this approach is that quite soft bows of very high quality can feel stiff - they take less force to produce equivalent level of sound. But stiffness still gives a very good indicator of which bows to try for a particular use.
Don't hesitate to call with questions in general or about specific bows. Our current stock of decent bows is on this .pdf file. We also stock lower end commercial bows, but do not measure them unless requested.
